In 2017, I spoke to Sinenhlanhla Ndlela, founder of the now popular and first choice vegan ice cream brand, Yococo. She took me through the backstory of Yococo and everything that helped the dream come to reality.

The brand has grown from strength to strength and continues to receive incredible support from many customers. Knowing how hard Sinenhlanhla and team work, it’s honestly been beautiful to watch.

I caught up with Sinenhlanhla to learn about new updates and the new website.

You’ve come so far from the launch and our chat in 2017 to where you are now. Can you briefly walk me through what has happened since?

Sinenhlanhla Ndlela: So much has happened, we have an online e-commerce store now; the team has grown, Ayanda, Sibongile and Chris have since joined. And, our customer base has grown exponentially as well.

We have been featured in the Mail & Guardian top 200 Young South Africans 2019 list. We also got chosen to go to Amsterdam as part of Investec’s program.

Penned Pieces: For those who are not familiar with the M&G top 200 Young South Africans list, it’s a list that profiles and celebrates young South Africans who are doing amazing things and are showing us what it means to be a leader.

What has been the greatest challenge during the pandemic and movements restrictions?

SN: It’s been difficult to get some of our ingredients because everyone is struggling to get their products.

Can you tell me more about the new website? (It looks so pretty btw)

SN: Thank you so much, it was something we were working on for a while and we got motivated by the pandemic to actually finish and start using it.

I see there are four flavours of scoops listed on your website; vanilla, salted caramel, mixed berries and stracciatella. What other flavours are currently available to order?

SN: We have so many flavors constantly. We are always trying new things. The ones you mentioned are usually from our weekly menu which changes a lot. But so far we have the ones you mentioned, beetroot chocolate, salted caramel tahini, golden milk, granadilla, and chocolate with sunflower seed butter.

People can now order via the website right?

SN: People in Joburg and Pretoria can order directly on the website. We’re still working on a plan for nationwide deliveries.

How does the delivery service work?

SN: We deliver on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

You have stockists, where your customers can still buy from, right?

SN: With the pandemic, things are a little bit different but we are [currently] supplying Jackson’s in Bryanston and Kyalami and Thrupps in Illovo.

Jozi and Pretoria, you heard it fam! Get your dairy-free, egg-free and sugar-free scoops from the Yococo website and get it delivered straight to your door. To other cities, let’s hang in there, a plan to get this treat to us is in the works.
